Otto Graf (actor)
Otto Graf (born November 28, 1896 in Haina , † February 22, 1977 in Berlin ; born Otto Ludwig Fritz Graf ) was a German actor and theater director .
Life
He was the illegitimate child of a master country hunter and a seamstress. Graf grew up in Meiningen and completed an apprenticeship at the Deutsche Hypothekenbank . Already an extra at the Meininger Theater , he took acting lessons from Erich Nowack.
He made his debut in 1920 at the Stadttheater Mühlhausen / Thuringia . There he was engaged as a youthful hero and lover until 1922. From 1922 to 1924 he played at the Gera Theater and from 1924 to 1928 at the Weimar National Theater . In Weimar he was seen as Ferdinand in Kabale und Liebe as well as in the title roles of Goethe's Faust , The Prince of Homburg , Hamlet and Maximilian in Franz Werfels Juarez and Maximilian .
From 1928 to 1933 he was part of the ensemble of the Städtische Bühnen Hannover . Here he played Stanhope in The Other Side of RC Sherriff . From 1933 to 1934 he was the first hero at the Frankfurt am Main municipal theaters . In 1934 Gustaf Gründgens brought him to the Berlin State Theater . In Berlin he played as a hero, lover and bon vivant until the theater was closed in 1944. In Meiningen he appeared as Hamlet.
After the war he tried to rebuild the Meininger Theater. In Berlin he was active as an actor and director from 1945 to 1952 at the stands , in comedy and at the Renaissance theater , as well as at the Hamburger Kammerspiele . Since 1952 he played at the Schiller Theater . In addition to his stage work, Graf took on various small roles in film and later also in television.
He was a teacher at the Max Reinhardt School for Drama . His artistic estate is in the Thuringian State Archive in Meiningen .
