The Angel with the String Play is a German love film by Heinz Rühmann from 1944.

action

New Year's Eve in the Alps : After a violent argument with his girlfriend, the opera singer Vera Schellhorn, wing maker Achim Strengholt goes alone to a lonely mountain hut. There he meets a young woman and although they initially quarrel, they spend New Year's Eve and finally the night together. The next morning, although they even kept the name from the other, they want to go to Innsbruck together in love , while Achim still has to get his luggage from the hotel. The young woman carries a carved "angel with the string play" with her, which Achim bought from a wood carver and gave to her. Both miss each other at the station.

Months later, Susanne - the young woman's name - lives alone in Munich . She makes a living doing small jobs in Dr. Thomas Weinzierl, who is in love with her and would like to marry her. Susanne, however, lives in the memory of the man from the alpine hut, especially since she learns that she is pregnant from him. She sells the angel figure to Thomas, who exhibits it in his shop as not for sale.

A year later, Susanne is the mother of a boy and a permanent employee at Thomas. He and the architect Bernhard Zoller courted her, but refused the proposals of both men. What she doesn't know is that Achim is Bernhard and Thomas' best friend. He is also about to marry Vera, who now appears in Thomas' shop and wants a special gift from Susanne for her fiancé. Susanne sells her the angel figure. Achim, in turn, immediately recognizes the angel and makes his way to the antique shop, where he finally sees Susanne again. A little later, at his engagement party, she told him that she had a child with him. Achim rearranges his life and marries Susanne. After all this time, however, it is primarily a matter of giving her son his father's surname and so she files for divorce shortly after the wedding. Above all, she doesn't want to take away her actual fiancé from Vera. However, she realizes that Susanne and Achim really love each other.

When Achim traveled back to the ski hut in the Alps before his wife was cold, she forgets her pride and follows him. They repeat the moment of their first meeting with reversed roles, since Achim is now the first in the ski hut. They realize that they were both at the train station at the time, just waiting for each other at different stations. When the postilion announces the new year, they are finally in each other's arms.
