Culture and sights

Natural monument sermon elm

As natural monument (AJ2) reported and in the prominent list and old tree specimens registered elm stands in the yard reasons (formerly angle Schulte) within the peasantry.

Once a pilgrimage from Borken to Wesel led directly past the elm. In Dietmar Sauermann's book “Legendary Places” it is noted: Pilgrims often stopped under this tree on their way. Therefore a pulpit was built in the tree on the lowest horizontal branches, from which the pastors said their prayers . - The tree probably owes its name to this fact.

The age of the striking tree veteran is given as around 600 years. In autumn 1959 a fire destroyed the residential and farm buildings of the farm. The elm was also badly damaged, as a large part of the mighty trunk was charred. As a result, the tree is now divided into two separate trunk fragments. To prevent it from breaking under the weight of its own crown, the elm was first cut in 1949/50 and again in 2001 , that is, it was cut back completely on the trunk like a pollarded willow tree . The total circumference of the two remains of the trunk is approx. 9 m. A laser-based height determination carried out in 2014 showed a tree height of 13.50 m.
