action

Germany at the end of the war in 1945. Bavaria is occupied by the Americans, and one day the GIs move into the village of Kreuting. The American occupiers are very surprised that they are greeted so hospitably, but initially they adhere to the fraternization ban imposed by their superior, Major William Sunlet. But soon the former enemies come closer to each other. The first thing to break the ice between a young American and a still adolescent farmer's maiden: the young GI Sergeant Bobby falls in love with the pretty daughter of the long-established large farmer Kolterner, Marie. Nevertheless, the stubborn US boys clash again and again with the stubborn and stubborn farmers of the village, who absolutely do not want to be told by the new masters and who, as tried-and-tested thick-headed, always want their heads through the wall. The Kolternerbauer and the Major, two stubborn heads who, despite great differences, are astonishingly similar in their knitting, are particularly unyielding.

Any attempt at harmony is initially punished by the occupiers as a rule violation. CIC Lieutenant Houseman proves to be a particularly strict follower of the rules. Instead of fraternization, he relies on re-education. And so the alleged troublemaker Kolterner is appointed the new mayor, in the hope of being able to discipline the stubborn old man in this way. But he doesn't even think about it and promptly goes to prison. Suddenly the major has a completely different problem on his mind: Who is taking care of his bulls now? They have a leader whose name is Adolf of all people and who only listens to the big farmers. The major has no choice but to release Kolternerbauer again. When a flood breaks out, both sides are forced to work hand in hand. This ultimately creates a basic trust. In the end, the people of Kreutingen showed what true peasant cunning means. With a lot of shrewdness and finesse, the opponents of a general understanding and fraternization were duped and laughed at bit by bit, sometimes even chased away and beaten up. Harmony wins, and the village organizes a rifle festival in honor of the major who has retreated. Opponents have become friends.

Reviews

Der Spiegel said: "It seems that ten years are enough to transform the first occupation contractions into a hearty, funny adventure that satisfies every good man."

At Filmdienst it says: “Comedy striving for international understanding that caricatures the attempt at re-education; geared towards situation comedy, superficial and not always sure of taste. "
