Paratecoma peroba is a tree in the trumpet family from southeastern Brazil . It is the only species in the Paratecoma genus.

description

Paratecoma peroba is an evergreen tree up to 30–40 meters tall. The trunk diameter reaches 1–2 meters. The grayish to gray-brown thick bark is furrowed.

The stalked and alternate leaves are composed of palmate leaves with 5–7 paper leaves . The scaly and almost bald, egg-shaped or elliptical short-stalked leaflets are pointed at the edge like a sawtooth. The petiole is 10–12 centimeters, the petioles 4–5 centimeters long, the leaflets 7–20 centimeters long and 2.5–7 centimeters wide.

Small, terminal or axillary, zymous, slightly hairy flower clusters are formed. The white-greenish flowers have a double inflorescence with two small bracts . The small, finely hairy calyx is cup-shaped with very small teeth. The narrow, bell-shaped 3–4 cm long crown with short lobes is finely haired and two-lipped. There are only 2 just protruding stamens , but 3 small staminodes without an antherode. The upper, elongated and square ribbed, short-haired ovary is scaly. The scar is bilobed and bilobed. There is a larger discus .

The capsule fruits are elongated, narrow and slightly spindle-shaped, they are woody, scaly, glabrous and pointed with two thick flaps. The fruits are 20–32 inches long and 2–2.5 inches wide. The kidney-shaped, flat yellowish seeds are double-winged, with delicate whitish and translucent wings. With wings, they are 3–4 inches long.

Taxonomy

The first description of Basionyms Tecoma peroba was made in 1924 by Samuel James Record in SJRecord & CDMell, Timbers Trop. Amer .: 537. The division into the new genus Paratecoma took place in 1931 by João Geraldo Kuhlmann in Minist. Agric. Serv. Fl. Bras. Bol. 4: 3. Another synonym is Paratecoma diandra Kuhlm.

The heavy wood is very durable, it is known as (White) Peroba (de Campos) . Peroba rosa is derived from Aspidosperma polyneuron .
