Klaus Täuber (born January 17, 1958 in Erlangen ) is a German football player who became a coach after his active career . During his career, Klaus Täuber was nicknamed “the boxer” - not only because he was born on the same day as Muhammad Ali . However, he only saw the red card once in his 245 games as a professional footballer.

Career as a player

Klaus Täuber's football career began at SpVgg Erlangen . From there, the Franconian went to 1. FC Nürnberg with his older brother Jürgen in 1976 , where he made his Bundesliga debut in the 1978/79 season . After rising again in 1980, he moved in the 1980/81 season after just one game to the Stuttgarter Kickers in the second division and stayed there for three years. In 1983 he moved to FC Schalke 04 , then still in the 2nd division . Täuber was the top scorer with 19 goals when the club returned to the first division in 1984. He became one of the top performers and scored 18 goals for the Knappen in his first year in the Bundesliga.

In 1987 he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where he was part of the team that won the UEFA Cup in 1988 , converting the decisive penalty in the final against Espanyol Barcelona and, shortly after being substituted on, hit the cross to make it 2-0. In total, Klaus Täuber was used 137 times in the Bundesliga, scoring 51 goals. In the second division he scored 55 goals in 108 games, an even better rate.

Klaus Täuber played "body-conscious". He used his body and spared neither himself nor the opponent in the game. The defenders of the Bundesliga once voted him the “biggest knockout in the league”. He handed out, but also had to take a lot. Serious injuries repeatedly forced him to take longer breaks. In November 1988, Täuber had to end his active career after suffering a severe disc injury to the cervical spine while training .

Klaus Täber's brothers Jürgen and Stephan were also football professionals. They form the only trio of brothers that was active in the Bundesliga. Both also played for Schalke and Nuremberg.

From player to coach

Klaus Täuber is now a trainer. He initially looked after FC Rhade and in 1992/93 SSV Jahn Regensburg . From 1995 to 2002 he was the coach of the Schalke amateur team "U23"; then he moved to the traditional club Schwarz-Weiß Essen , which he also looked after in the 2005/06 season in the Oberliga Nordrhein. In February 2007, he replaced Ingo Anderbrügge, another former Schalke professional, as coach of VfB Hüls . On April 2, 2010 he was released from his coaching activity. Another ex-Schalke player, the 52-time national player Olaf Thon , was appointed as his successor . Since April 6, 2010, Täuber looked after the NRW league club Westfalia Herne , where he was released again in March 2011.
