The Gauliga Westfalen 1939/40 was the seventh season of the Gauliga Westphalia in football. FC Schalke 04 secured the championship with an eleven point lead over Arminia Bielefeld . Schalke qualified for the final round of the German championship , which they won with a 1-0 final victory over Dresdner SC . Because of the Second World War , relegation was suspended this season, which is why Borussia Dortmund and SpVgg Röhlinghausen remained in the Gauliga. Union Gelsenkirchen and German SC Hagen rose from the district leagues . The Gauliga Westfalen played with twelve teams in the 1940/41 season.
