Michael Klinkert (born July 7, 1968 in Bous ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Klinkert played a total of 301 games in the Bundesliga , scoring 20 goals and 2 own goals. In 1995 the defender of Borussia Mönchengladbach won the DFB Cup . As captain of the team, he accepted the trophy.

He learned to play football at his home club, the FSG 08 / DJK Bous. There he spent his entire youth and in 1986, at the age of 18, moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 2. Bundesliga . There he was only a reservist and only played 3 games, so he moved to FC Schalke 04 .

There he became a regular player straight away, but he could not prevent relegation from the Bundesliga and so he went to the 2nd Bundesliga with Schalke. After a good season in which the promotion did not succeed, he moved to the 1st Bundesliga to Borussia Mönchengladbach . He spent 12 years there and was a regular and leading player in the foal eleven for a long time.

During his career, Klinkert was seen as a defensive player who was strong in duels and, above all, a strong header. In the 1994/95 season he was one of the first central defenders in a back four in the Bundesliga. His trainer Bernd Krauss introduced the game system despite the great concerns of some critics. Due to his tough style of play, Klinkert suffered several injuries. In addition to a broken shin at an indoor tournament, he survived several severe concussions. Among other things, he collided with Jürgen Kohler in the 1995/96 home game against Borussia Dortmund and was carried off the field unconscious.

After retiring in 2006, he trained as a coach in Cologne.

He is currently working with Marcel Witeczek for the AOK in training school classes.
