Bernd Krauss (born May 8, 1957 in Dortmund ) is a former German - Austrian soccer player and soccer coach .
Career as a player
Krauss began his active football career in 1971 with the Dortmund suburb SV Schüren and played there in the youth department until 1976. In the 1976/77 season he played as a midfielder at Borussia Dortmund . From 1977 to 1983 he was a player in Austria at SK Rapid Vienna and temporarily took Austrian citizenship. He ended his career in 1990 after six years with Borussia Mönchengladbach . At the end of his career in the Bundesliga he had 168 games and eight goals to record.
Krauss completed 22 international matches for the Austrian national team between 1981 and 1983 and took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He made his debut in the Austrian team against the German team , with an own goal.
Coaching career
In 1988/89 Krauss began his coaching career at SC Kapellen-Erft . He then coached the amateurs of Borussia Mönchengladbach (1989/90) and 1. FC Köln (1990), before becoming a coach assistant in 1991 and then from November 6, 1992 to December 7, 1996 coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach. With this club he won the DFB Cup in 1995 after being the first coach in the Bundesliga to play with a back four in defense. In the fall of 1991 he was briefly head coach as the successor to Gerd vom Bruch .
One day before the 1996/97 winter break, they parted ways: Krauss was given a leave of absence due to lack of success, went to Spain and coached Real Sociedad San Sebastián (1997–1999) and RCD Mallorca (2001). His return to the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund in 2000 was unsuccessful; after only eight weeks without a win, he was also released here. In 2002 he moved to Greece to Aris Thessaloniki , but was fired in the summer of the same year.
Until the summer of 2004 he was registered as unemployed before the Austrian club VfB Admira Wacker Mödling signed him . There Krauss signed a one-year contract with an option for another season. However, he resigned after 134 days due to a lack of athletic prospects and after three defeats in a row. After stints in the United Arab Emirates and Iran, he coached the Spanish club CD Tenerife from April 11 to December 5, 2006 . From August 5, 2007 to December 6, 2007, he was the coach of the Austrian first league club ASK Schwadorf .
In January 2012, Krauss started working as a trainer and general manager at Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia . At the end of March 2012 he was released again.
