Youri Mulder (born March 23, 1969 in Brussels ) is a Dutch football coach and sports commentator. As a player he was active for FC Twente and Schalke 04 .

Career as a player

Youri's father, Jan Mulder , was also a Dutch national soccer player. Mulder's career began at SDO Bussum . After a short interlude at Ajax Amsterdam , he made his first experiences in professional football in Enschede . From 1990 to 1993 Youri played at FC Twente in the Dutch honor division . Due to his achievements, he soon gave up the reputation of having only come to the team as his father's son. In his second season at Twente, he played with Ronald de Boer .

Talent scouts from FC Schalke 04 quickly became aware of him. For the 1993/94 season Youri moved to Schalke in the Bundesliga . In his nine years at Schalke, he quickly became a crowd favorite, although he only scored 33 league goals between 1993 and 2002. Youri Mulder was part of the Schalke team called Eurofighter , which won the 1997 UEFA Cup . However, Mulder could not be used in the semi-finals and finals due to a torn cruciate ligament that he suffered during a league game against Karlsruher SC . In 2001 and 2002 Mulder won the DFB Cup with FC Schalke 04 . Youri Mulder ended his professional career in 2002. He was active for De Tubanters from Enschede for another year .

The last time he wore orange was in a friendly against Morocco on April 28, 1999. One of his three goals for the Elftal was a very important one: With the winning goal against Belarus after a presentation by Orlando Trustfull , he kept the Dutch in the race for qualification European Championship 1996 in England .

After the career

After retiring, Mulder worked as a sports expert for NOS , Dutch television. He was also a commentator on the Dutch version of the computer game Fifa 07 together with Evert Ten Napel .

In the 2007/08 season Mulder, who has the A license (see football coach ) , was a forward coach of the FC Twente coaching team in Enschede . Since April 13, 2008 he has been working again for FC Schalke 04. At first he managed the team together with interim coach Michael Büskens until the end of the season. Just two days after taking office, he had to look after the team for the first time in the Bundesliga, and with them he won a 5-0 win against Energie Cottbus . After the end of the 2007/08 season , Büskens and Mulder moved into the second tier and supported the new coach Fred Rutten as assistant coach from July 1, 2008 . After Rutten's leave of absence on March 26, 2009, Mulder led the training of the first Schalke team with Mike Büskens and Oliver Reck until the new coach Felix Magath started working . Since Magath brought his two assistant coaches Seppo Eichkorn and Bernd Hollerbach from VfL Wolfsburg , Mulder left FC Schalke 04 after the 2008/09 season. For the 2011/12 season he returned to FC Twente as assistant coach of Co Adriaanse .
