Kaspars Petrovs (* 1976 in Grobiņa ) is a Latvian serial killer who was arrested as a strangler of Riga in 2003 in Riga .

Life

Initially, Kaspars Petrovs was suspected of being involved in five murders committed in Riga in 2002 and 2003. During the later investigation, the police found that Petrovs had killed more than 20 elderly women. All of his victims were single elderly retirees.

His approach was as follows: he observed older women in the post office or in the market; he then made her acquaintance and gained her trust, for example by helping to carry her shopping bags home. Another way to gain access to the apartment was to pretend to be a gas man who would have to read the gas meter . Petrows then took advantage of the carelessness of his victims and strangled them with a towel he had brought with him. Then he put his victims in bed and made them look like they were sleeping.

Most of his prey was some cash, canned goods, and sometimes jewelry. Police put the stolen property at around $ 35,000.

Petrovs' crimes were discovered by accident: when the police found fingerprints in one of the victim's apartments, they were compared with the central file. Petrov had already been recorded there for a few minor property crimes . On February 3, 2003, he was arrested.

In the subsequent trial, on May 13, 2005, Petrovs was sentenced to life imprisonment for 13 of these murders .
