Career

societies

Kevin Kurányi started playing football at Serrano FC from his hometown of Petrópolis. From 1993 to 1994 he played temporarily in his mother's home country for Las Promesas Panama , before he played again for Serrano for two years and in 1996 he rejoined Las Promesas. In 1997, at the age of 15, Kurányi moved to the youth department of VfB Stuttgart in Germany at the request of his father, who grew up in the Ludwigsburg area , in order to improve his knowledge of the German language .

VfB Stuttgart

Kurányi became German runner-up in 2003 with VfB Stuttgart. In the 2003/04 season his club was fourth and reached the last sixteen of the Champions League .

FC Schalke 04

For the 2005/2006 season, Kurányi moved to league rivals FC Schalke 04 , with whom he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2010. The transfer fee of allegedly seven million euros was the highest in the history of VfB Stuttgart.

In August 2005 he won the league cup with Schalke and scored the 1-0 winner against VfB Stuttgart. With Schalke he was again fourth in the league and reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals. In May 2007 Kurányi was German runner-up for the second time in his career. In 2008 he reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Schalke.

In the 2007/08 season he scored the first four-pack of his Bundesliga career: Kurányi scored the last four goals in the 5-0 win on April 15, 2008 against Energie Cottbus . On December 6, 2009, he scored his 100th Bundesliga goal with his goal to make it 1-0 against Hertha BSC . With his tenth goal of the season on January 23, 2010 in the game against VfL Bochum , Kurányi had scored a double-digit number of goals this season in eight consecutive seasons. Only three players have surpassed this in the history of the Bundesliga: Gerd Müller (13 times in a row), Manfred Burgsmüller (ten times) and Robert Lewandowski (nine times).

His contract with FC Schalke 04 expired on June 30, 2010. With a total of 71 Bundesliga goals for Schalke, Kurányi is fourth among the most successful Schalke Bundesliga shooters behind Klaus Fischer (182 goals), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (82 goals) and Ebbe Sand (74 goals) (as of May 5, 2017).

FK Dynamo Moscow

During the 2010 summer break, Kurányi moved to the Russian first division club FK Dynamo Moscow . Kurányi played his first competitive game for Dynamo Moscow on July 31, 2010 in a 1-1 home game against Krylja Sowetow Samara . He scored his first goal on August 14, 2010 in his second game in a 1-1 draw in the away game against Zenit St. Petersburg with the goal to make it 1-0 in the 26th minute. A week later, he met twice in the game against city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow (3-0) for the first time. The striker scored regularly until the end of the season. Dynamo fans voted him Player of the Season. According to Russian media, Kurányi earned 5.7 million euros a year in Moscow and was the highest-paid football player in Russia until Samuel Eto'o moved to the Russian league.

On November 17, 2011, Kurányi extended his contract with Dynamo Moscow early until mid-2015.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

After not renewing his contract, Kurányi returned to Germany during the 2015 summer break and initially stayed fit with the fourth division club 1. FC Saarbrücken . On July 24, 2015, he joined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . He received a contract valid until the end of the 2015/16 season . He made his competitive debut on August 9, 2015 in the 2-0 defeat against TSV 1860 Munich in the first round match for the DFB Cup with a substitute for Tarik Elyounoussi in the 62nd minute. By the end of the season, he had not scored a goal for Hoffenheim in 16 Bundesliga games. His contract ran until the end of the 2015/16 season and there was no extension of the contract. National team

Kurányi in June 2005

He played his first international match in the German national team on March 29, 2003 in a 1-1 draw at the Frankenstadion in Nuremberg in the European Championship qualifier against Lithuania . Kurányi took part with the German national team at the 2004 European Championships in Portugal and in 2005 at the Confederations Cup in Germany. However , he was not nominated for the 2006 World Cup by the then national coach Jürgen Klinsmann . On February 7, 2007, he made his comeback in the national team in a 3-1 win in the test match in the Düsseldorf multifunctional arena against Switzerland and scored 1-0. In the 2-1 victory in the European Championship qualifier at Prague's Letná stadium against the Czech Republic on March 24, 2007, he scored both goals for the German team. On March 28, 2007 Kurányi ran in the friendly against Denmark in the MSV-Arena in Duisburg for the first time as captain of the German national team. For the EM 2008 he was appointed to the German squad by national coach Joachim Löw . The then 26-year-old was substituted on in the final against Spain. The German team lost the game 0-1.

When he played in the World Cup qualification on October 11, 2008 in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund against Russia , in which he only sat in the stands, he traveled back home on his own before the second half. Löw informed Kurányi's club and decided not to call him up for international matches. According to Löw, this incident was no longer decisive for not being taken into account at the 2010 soccer World Cup , but Kurányi did not fit into the national team for tactical reasons. Thus, the 52nd international match on September 6, 2008 was his last for the DFB-Elf, for which he had scored 19 goals.
