The Tikhvin wagon factory ( Russian Тихвинский вагоностроительный завод , Tichwinski wagonostroitelny sawod) is a Russian freight wagon factory owned by United Wagon Company near Saint Petersburg . The plant, which opened in 2012 and covers an area of 50 ha (233,000 m ² ), is also one of the largest industrial projects in Europe.

Since 1963 there was a foundry in Tikhvin that was later assigned to the Kirowwerk . In 2005, Alexander Nesis presented his plan to build a new factory for freight wagons there.

In 2014 almost 10,000 freight cars were produced. This made the Tikhvin wagon factory one of the largest wagon manufacturers in the CIS and Europe.

The plant has an automated production line and is equipped with modern systems such as electric ovens from Siemens VAI , molding systems from Heinrich Wagner Sinto , machine tools from Danobat , painting systems from Eisenmann AG , transfer platforms from Vollert and welding robots from KUKA Systems .

The Tikhvin wagon factory has an annual production capacity of 16,000 freight wagons. The first customer was the coal conveyor SUEK . The American-made freight wagons have Diamond bogies ( Barber S-2-R ) licensed by Wabtec with coil springs that are designed for a mileage of 500,000 km. There are flat cars , hopper cars and gondolas with 23.5 or 25 t axle load produced.
