Adlan Abujewitsch Warajew

Adlan Abujewitsch Warajew ( Russian Адлан Абуевич Вараев ; born January 2, 1962 in Sadowoje, Chechnya ; † May 3, 2016 in Chechnya) was a Soviet wrestler.

Career

Adlan Warajew, a Chechen from Grozny began in 1975 at the age of 13 years with the rings . He developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler and, after joining the Soviet Army, became a member of the Grozny Army Sports Club. The coaches who coached him during his career were Abdulwahid Warajew, Magomed Daghilow, Aslanbeg Dzgoew, Degu Bagaew and Boris Basaew. He made his debut on the international wrestling mat by winning the lightweight title at the European Junior Championships in Leipzig in 1982 .

In 1986 he was also European champion in the senior welterweight division in Athens and in the same year won the vice world welterweight title in Budapest . In the final he was defeated by the outstanding Cuban Raul Cascaret Fonseca on points.

1987 was an exceptionally successful year for Adlan. First he was European champion in Tampere in the spring and then in the fall in Clermont-Ferrand also welterweight world champion. At the world championship he achieved notable victories over Raul Cascaret and the American Olympic champion from 1984 David Schultz .

In the Olympic year 1988 he won his third European Championship title in a superior style in Manchester , but was surprisingly defeated in the final at the Olympic Games in Seoul by the exploven American Kenneth Monday with 2: 5 points and thus only won the silver medal.

After these Olympic Games, Adlan Warajew ended his wrestling career and completed a training as a coach. After that he was coach of the Russian national freestyle relay for many years and is now vice-president of the Russian Wrestling Association.

Varayev likely died on May 3, 2016 when he fell into a river from a great height while trying to take a picture. Despite a large-scale search, his body could not be found at first. Sixteen days after his disappearance, his body was found on June 19, 2016.
