Switlana Iwaniwna Masij ( Ukrainian Світлана Іванівна Мазій ; born January 30, 1968 in Kiev ) is a former Ukrainian rower who ran for the Soviet Union until 1991 .

Athletic career

Switlana Masij won the bronze medal with the Soviet double four at the Junior World Championships in 1985 . In 1986 she took part in the world championships in the adult class and took sixth place with the double foursome. At the 1987 World Championships in Copenhagen , Switlana Masij, Marina Schukowa , Iryna Kalimbet and Antonina Dumtschewa received the bronze medal behind the boats from the GDR and Bulgaria. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , the double foursome from the GDR won ahead of Iryna Kalimbet, Switlana Masij, Inna Frolowa and Antonina Dumtschewa.

In 1989 the World Championships took place in Bled, Natalia Kwasja , Marja Omeljanowitsch , Switlana Masij and Iryna Kalimbet won the silver medal behind the GDR double four. At the last appearance of the GDR national rowing team at the 1990 World Championships in Tasmania , the GDR double scull also won in front of the boat from the Soviet Union with Jelena Chlopzewa , Switlana Masij, Marja Omeljanowitsch and Sarija Sakirowa .

Switlana Masij did not return to the regatta courses until 1993, now in the Ukrainian jersey. At the World Championships in 1993 she reached the double sculls eleventh place and in the quadruple sculls ninth. In 1994 in Indianapolis the Ukrainians won the bronze medal in the four-four behind the German boat and the Chinese with Switlana Masij, Dina Miftachutdynowa , Olena Ronshyna and Tetjana Ustyuschanina . After a tenth place at the 1995 World Championships , the Ukrainian double scull reached the A-final at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta after a fourth place in the preliminary run and a victory in the repechage , three seconds behind the German boat there was a silver medal decision, after which the Ukrainians had reached the finish line two hundredths of a second before the Canadians. For Inna Frolowa and Switlana Masij it was eight years after Seoul the second Olympic silver medal, for Dina Miftachutdynowa and Olena Rontschina it was the first Olympic medal.

At the 1997 World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette , the same four rowers won the bronze medal behind the Germans and Danes. After seventh place in 1998 , the Ukrainian double scull won the silver medal behind the Germans at the 1999 World Championships in Canada in the line-up of Jana Kramarenko , Switlana Masij, Tetjana Ustyuschanina and Olena Rontschina. At the Olympic Games , the Ukrainian double scull finished fourth, four seconds behind the third-placed crew.

After a two-year break, Masij reached seventh place in a double scull with Natalija Huba at the 2003 World Championships . At the 2004 Olympic Games , Masij and Huba took sixth place. After her fourth participation in the final at the Olympic Games, Masij finally stopped competitive sport in 2004.

The 1.83 m tall Switlana Masij rowed for Spartak Kiev .
