Vladimir Saripsyanovich Shestakov

Vladimir Saripsyanowitsch Schestakow ( Russian Владимир Зарипзянович Шестаков ; born January 30, 1961 in Lesouchastok , Perm region ) is a former Soviet judoka . He won an Olympic silver medal in 1988.

The 1.76 m tall Shestakov competed in the light middleweight up to 78 kg until 1987, then in the middle weight up to 86 kg.

In 1979 he won the silver medal at the European Junior Championships. In 1984 he took second place with the Soviet team at the European team championships. In early 1985, Shestakov successively won the tournaments in Tokyo, Tbilisi and Prague. At the World Championships in Seoul he lost in the semifinals against Torsten Bréchôt from the GDR, but then won the bronze medal. In 1986 he won the Goodwill Games in Moscow. 1987 Shestakov belonged to the victorious Soviet team at the European team championships.

In 1988 he won the tournament in Budapest in his new weight class. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he defeated the Dutchman Ben Spijkers in the semi-finals . In the final, the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher won through Yusei-Gachi (referee decision). Shestyakov took third place at the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990. In 1992 he reached seventh place again at the European Championships.

After his career, Shestakov was Vice President from 1996 to 1999 and President of the Russian Judo Federation from 1999 to 2004. As a coach he was responsible for the national teams of Russia and Latvia.
