Toomas Tõniste (born April 26, 1967 in Tallinn , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian sailor and politician .

Life

Toomas Tõniste graduated from Tallinn School in 1985. Until 1997 he studied sport at the Tallinn Pedagogical University .

Sports

Toomas Tõniste started sailing together with his twin brother Tõnu Tõniste in 1976. Four years later, the sailing competitions of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow took place in Tallinn . From 1987 to 1989 both were three times Soviet champions and between 1983 and 1991 eight times Estonian champions. In 1990 they won the Kieler Woche and became European champions in 1992.

At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 Toomas Tõniste and his twin brother won the Olympic silver medal for the Soviet Union in sailing ( 470 class ). At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona both won bronze medals for Estonia in the same class. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , they disappointed with 10th place. Toomas Tõniste became world champion in 2006 and European champion in 2007. In 1994/95 and 2006/2007 he was the Estonian sailing master.

politics

In addition to sailing, Tõnu and Toomas Tõniste have also been active as entrepreneurs since 1994. Toomas Tõniste has been politically active since 1998. He belongs to the Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit party . From 1999 to 2001 and 2006/2007 he was a member of Tallinn City Council. Toomas Tõniste has been a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) since 2007 . On June 12, 2017, he was appointed finance minister in the Ratas I cabinet to succeed Sven Sester .

Private

Toomas Tõniste is married. He has a daughter and two sons.
