Tiit Sokk

Tiit Sokk (born November 15, 1964 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is a former Estonian basketball player and current coach . He competed with the Soviet Union team during the Soviet occupation of Estonia and was Olympic champion with this team in 1988 .

Athletic performance

Tiit Sokk started competitive sports in 1981. He was supported by his father, basketball player August Sokk . He won the gold medal with the USSR national basketball team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul . At the World Championships in 1986 and 1990 Sokk won the silver medal. With the Tallinn team Kalev he was 1991 Soviet champion. In 1988 he was voted the best athlete in the Estonian SSR .

From 1992 to 1996 Sokk played with Panathinaikos Athens , 1996/97 with Aris Thessaloniki . In Greece he was cup winner in 1993 and 1996 and runner-up in 1993, 1995 and 1996.

In 1997 Sokk founded his own basketball school in the Estonian capital. A year later he became the coach of the Dalkia / Nybit club . From 2004 to 2007 and since 2009 he has coached the Estonian national basketball team .

Tiit Sokk's sons Tanel and Sten-Timmu are also professional basketball players.

During his time at Panathinaikos Athens, Sokk received the Greek nationality under the name "Tout Giannopoulos".
