Valdemaras Novickis ( Russian Вальдемар Новицкис ; born February 22, 1956 in Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Lithuanian handball coach and former handball player . He was used in the attack on the back center , but was considered a proven defense specialist .
Career
The 1.86 m tall and at his active time 103 kg right-handed player began his professional career in his hometown at Žalgiris Kaunas with the handball game. After moving to city rivals Granitas Kaunas , he was Soviet runner-up in 1981 and 1985 and third in 1979 and 1986. In 1986/87 he led Granitas as captain to win the IHF Cup with two draws (23:23, 18:18) against Atlético Madrid . Only one year later he was defeated by HC Minaur Baia Mare in the final of the IHF Cup in 1987/88 (21:20, 20:23). He then moved to Spain to BM Málaga and VfL Bad Schwartau , but returned in 1990 back to granitas.
With the Soviet junior selection, he became Junior World Champion in 1977. At the 1978 World Cup, he surprisingly lost to the West German team with the Soviet men's national handball team . He also had to be content with silver at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In 1982 he won his first major title. With a 30:27 after extra time against Yugoslavia he became world champion. For the world title he received the award of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта СССР). In 1985 he defeated the GDR selection in the final of the Supercup in Germany. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he became Olympic champion .
After retiring in 1993, Valdemaras Novickis was the coach of both the Lithuanian national team , which he was in charge of until 2000, and Granitas Kaunas, which he continues to lead in the 2013/14 season.
