Rudolf Pawlowytsch Powarnitsyn ( Ukrainian Рудольф Павлович Поварніцин , English transcription Rudolf Povarnitsyn ; born June 13, 1962 in Votkinsk ) is a former Ukrainian athlete who was successful as a high jumper for the Soviet Union .

The until then internationally unknown athlete amazed the professional world when he was the first person to jump a height of 2.40 m on August 11, 1985 in Donetsk and was able to increase his personal best by an astonishing 14 centimeters. He exceeded the old world record of the Chinese Zhu Jianhua by one centimeter. However, Powarnitsyn was replaced three weeks later by Igor Paklin , who jumped 2.41 m at the Universiade in Kobe, as the world record holder.

Powarnitsyn achieved his most significant success by winning the bronze medal in the high jump at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Behind the Soviet winner Hennadij Awdjejenko (2.38 m) jumped three athletes 2.36 m with the American Hollis Conway , the Swede Patrik Sjöberg and Powarnizyn. Due to the lower number of unsuccessful attempts, Conway took second place ahead of Sjöberg and Powarnizyn, who shared third place.

In 1989 Powarnitsyn became the Soviet high jump champion. He also won the bronze medal at the Universiade that same year behind Cubans Javier Sotomayor and Hollis Conway. At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1991 Powarnitsyn only reached 13th place.

Rudolf Powarnitsyn is 2.01 m tall and weighed 75 kg when he was active. He was trained by Vladimir Kiba.
