Karl Budde

Karl Ferdinand Reinhard Budde (born April 13, 1850 in Bensberg , † January 29, 1935 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant theologian and Old Testament scholar .

Life

Budde was the son of a senior teacher at the cadet school in Bensberg. The Krupp director Otto Budde and the later Prussian minister Hermann von Budde were his brothers. He received a classical humanistic education at the Royal High School at Burgplatz in Essen . From 1867 to 1873 he studied Protestant theology in Bonn, Berlin and Utrecht. At the age of 23, Budde became a private lecturer in 1873 and an associate professor at the University of Bonn in 1879 . From 1878 to 1885 he was also the inspector of the theological monastery and taught German, history and religion at a secondary school for girls . In 1889 he was appointed professor of the Old Testament at the University of Strasbourg . From 1900 until his retirement in 1921 he taught at the University of Marburg and was its rector in 1910.

In 1883 he received an honorary theological doctorate from the University of Giessen ; 1911 from the Scottish University of St Andrews .

At that time he was considered a main representative of the old Wellhausen school. In addition to his work on the Old Testament, he campaigned for the religious art of Ludwig Richter in the spirit of cultural Protestantism . His great Judge collection he presented in 1907 the Museum Folkwang . Since he became acquainted with Friedrich Spitta and Julius Smend in Strasbourg, Budde was particularly interested in hymnology and was involved in the older liturgical movement . He was part of the commission for the Strasbourg hymn book , created new translations of the old Dutch songs of Adrianus Valerius , and encouraged the rediscovery of old Christmas carols.
