Bruno Junk

Bruno Junk (born September 27, 1929 in Valga , Estonia , † September 22, 1995 in Tartu , Estonia) was a Soviet athlete of Estonian origin. The walker was an Olympic medalist in 1952 and 1956.

Athletic performance

Bruno Junk studied civil engineering at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute ( Tallinna Polütehniline Instituut ) and economics at the Tartu State University . From 1948 he trained independently for running competitions.

Bruno Junk won the bronze medal in walking (10 km) at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki at the age of 22. At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne , he won the bronze medal in walking (20 km) at the age of 27. Junk was the Soviet walking champion four times (1951 and 1955 over 20 km and 1952 and 1953 over 10 km) and from 1948 to 1959 he was Estonian walking champion eight times. Between 1951 and 1956 he set world records for walking over 15 km and over 20 km. He broke Soviet records ten times, and Estonian thirty times. In 1956 he received the title of "Master Sportsman of the Soviet Union" and in 1969 "Honored Sportsman of the Estonian SSR ".

After his active sports career, Junk worked as a trainer. He also worked in the Ministry of the Interior and in the Police Office of the Estonian SSR. From 1979 to 1989 Junk was chairman of the Soviet Athletics Federation.
