Alimbeg Borissowitsch Bestajew, 1956

Alimbeg Borisovich Bestajew ( Russian Алимбег Борисович Бестаев , Ossetian Бестауты Борисы фырт Алимбег / Bestauty Borissy fýrt Alimbeg , * 15. August 1936 in Tskhinvali , † 1988 ) was a Soviet wrestler . He was world champion in 1957 and winner of the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 in free style in the lightweight.

Career

Alimbeg Bestajew grew up in Ordzhonikidze (today Vladikavkaz ) and was Ossete . He began wrestling in Ordzhonikidze and was one of the best Soviet wrestlers in free style as a junior. In 1953 he was junior champion of the largest Soviet republic, the RSFSR, which was essentially identical to today's Russia , and in 1954 he was junior champion of the Soviet Union .

In 1955, Alimbeg Bestajew represented the Soviet Union at the World Youth Festival in Warsaw , after he had become Soviet champion for the first time in that year before I. Dadaschew and Gabarajew , where he took the excellent 2nd place in the lightweight behind the Poland Jan Kuczynski . In 1956 he also achieved two great successes at international championships. First he won the World Cup in Istanbul in the lightweight and then he won the bronze medal in the lightweight at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in the same year . He lost to the top wrestlers at the time, Shigeru Kasahara from Japan and Imam-Ali Habibi from Iran .

In 1957 he achieved the greatest success of his wrestling career in Istanbul by winning the world title in lightweight. He remained undefeated there in five fights. Alimbek Bestajew won three wins and two draws against Musa Aliew from Bulgaria and Hayrullah Sahin from Turkey .

This victory ended the short but very successful international wrestling career of Alimbeg Bestajew. In 1958 in the Soviet Union in Vladimir Sinyavsky he had grown up a competitor whom he could not defeat and who represented the Soviet Union at the international championships in the following years.

Alimbeg Bestajew was once again Soviet runner-up in the lightweight in 1962. As a member of the army, however, he had long before started studying sports at the Military Institute of Sports in Leningrad , which he graduated in 1959. He then worked as a wrestler trainer until his early death.

In the Soviet Union Bestayev had received the honorary titles of Honored Master of Sport and Honored Trainer of Sport , which were customary at the time .
