Uno Palu

Uno Palu (born February 8, 1933 in Sindi , Estonia ) is a former Soviet athlete of Estonian origin.

Athletic career

In 1953 Palu won the Estonian championship in high jump , but shortly thereafter specialized in the decathlon . Two years later he won the Estonian championship in this discipline. He was able to repeat this success five more times in the course of his career until 1964. At the Soviet championship that year he won the silver medal. In 1956 he qualified with a third place for the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne . Despite his best performances in the shot put, javelin throw and high jump, he had to be content with fourth place. In 1958 he won the Soviet championship title in the decathlon and took fifth place in the year's best list. At the European Championships in Stockholm, he won the silver medal behind Vasily Kuznetsov . In 1960 he won the bronze medal again at the Soviet championship and improved the Estonian record to 7598 points.

During his career, he not only increased the Estonian record in the decathlon several times, but also set records in the 110-meter hurdles , 200-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles . From 1955 to 1958 he won the Estonian championship title in the 110-meter hurdles four times in a row. In 1957 he also won the 200-meter hurdles.
