Giorgi Sergos dse Schirtladse ( Georgian გიორგი სერგოს ძე სხირტლაძე , Russian Георгий Сергеевич Схиртладзе Georgi Sergeyevich Schirtladse * 9. November 1932 in Mtiskalta , Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti ; † 25. March 2008 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet wrestler from Georgia .
Life
Giorgi Schirtladse joined the sports club Spartak Tbilisi at an early age and started wrestling there. After 1945, a wrestling center developed in Tbilisi that trained a large number of excellent wrestlers. Schirtladse, who wrestled in free style, was one of them. He celebrated first successes at the national level in 1953 when he became the Soviet runner-up in free style in the middleweight division. In 1954 he was the first Soviet champion in the same weight class, defeating his Georgian countryman Dawit Tschimakuridze , the 1952 Olympic champion, in the final battle. Giorgi Schirtladse was Soviet champion in 1957 and 1960, again in the middleweight division.
On the international wrestling mat, he first drew attention to himself in an international match between the Soviet Union and Sweden in 1954 in Stockholm , where he defeated the two top Swedish middleweight wrestlers Bengt Lindblad and Axel Grönberg , the Olympic champions of 1948 and 1952. At the Soviet free style championships in 1956, Schirtladse only finished second behind the Estonian Saar, but was still nominated for the Olympic Games in Melbourne . There he won the bronze medal in the middleweight division in free style.
At the 1957 World Cup in Istanbul , Schirtladse was runner-up. After beating Hasan Güngör from Turkey , he drew against Prodan Gardschew from Bulgaria , but then surprisingly lost to Nabi Sorouri from Iran and thus gambled away the world title.
In 1959, Schirtladze took 3rd place at the Second People's Spartakiad of the USSR behind Tausbek Dschachsorow and Nikolai Aksenow, but received the confidence of the Soviet sports officials again when he was nominated for the World Cup that year in Tehran . In Tehran he justified this trust, because he became world champion there, although he lost again to Nabi Sorouri.
In 1960 Schirtladze was before G. Gobedishvili and A. Agabebian Soviet champion and represented the Soviet Union again at the Olympic Games. In Rome he lost to the American Edward De Witt and thus no longer reached the final battle against Hasan Güngör, but at least won the silver medal.
After 1960 Schirtladse was no longer at the start of any international wrestling championships.
