Timir Alexejewitsch Pinegin

Timir Alexejewitsch Pinegin ( Russian Тимир Алексеевич Пинегин ; born June 12, 1927 in Moscow ; † January 30 or 31, 2013 ) was a Russian sports sailor . He took from 1956 to 1972 five times as part of the Soviet team at the Olympic Summer Games in part and was together with his partner Fyodor Schutkow the first Soviet Olympic champion in sailing and the first Yakutian gold medalist at the Olympic Games.

Career

Pinegin, the son of a Yakut linguist and a sports shooter, was a skier in his youth and in 1947 a member of the Soviet national alpine skiing team. Pinegin began sailing during World War II and grew to become one of the best Soviet sports sailors by 1953 when he teamed up with Fyodor Shutkov . In 1953 Pinegin became Soviet champion for the first time in the Star Boat Class, and twelve more national championships in this class were to follow. In 1956 Pinegin and Schutkow reached the 8th place at the Olympic Games in Mexico City .

In 1960 , at the Games in Rome, Pinegin and Schutkow were crowned the first Olympic sailing champions in the history of the Soviet Union in the boat Tornado . At the Olympic Games in 1964 and 1968 , the team took part two more times in the Star class and reached fifth and sixteenth place; In 1964 Pinegin and Schutkow were also European champions. After Schutkows retirement from sailing Pinegin reached at his last participation in the Olympic Games in 1972 in the Soling class together with Valentin Samotaikin and Rais Galimov seventh place. Pinegin's greatest successes in the Soling class were European Championship silver in 1971 and the Soviet championship titles in 1970, 1972 and 1973.

After retiring from active sport in 1973, Pinegin remained sailing as a trainer, sports official and referee, including at the Summer Olympics in 1984 and 1988.
