Paul Hurlburt Smart (born January 13, 1892 in Yarmouth , Canada , † June 22, 1979 in Darien ) was an American sailor .
successes
Paul Smart took part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London with his son Hilary in the Star boat class . With their boat Hilarious they won two of the six races and finished the regatta in first place with 5828 total points, making them Olympic champions ahead of the Cuban and Dutch boats . At the World Championships in Cascais in 1948, he and his son won the bronze medal.
Smart holds law degrees from Harvard University and the University of Oxford . During the First World War he served as a lieutenant in the artillery and was awarded the Silver Star , the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart , among others . After the war he worked as a lawyer before he became an investment banker.
