Durward Knowles (* 2 November 1917 in Nassau , Bahamas ; † 24. February 2018 ) was a Bahamian Star boat - sailors . He took part in a total of eight Olympic Games , making him one of the athletes with the most Olympics . Knowles started for the Nassau Yacht Club .
Olympic participation
- 1948 Durward Knowles made his Olympic debut at the age of 30 at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London at the Torquay competition site . He started for the UK and finished in fourth place.
- In 1952 at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki , he started for the Bahamas and finished fifth.
- In 1956 at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne , he was able to achieve third place and thus won his first Olympic medal with bronze.
- 1960 In Rome , Knowles finished sixth at the 1960 Summer Olympics .
- In 1964 Durward Knowles celebrated its greatest success. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (competition location: Fujisawa (Kanagawa) ) he was Olympic champion together with his foreman Cecil Cooke .
- 1968 was fifth at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City .
- 1972 At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Kiel , he only reached 13th place.
- 1988 After 16 years, Durward Knowles took part in the Olympic Games again. At the 1988 Games in Seoul he took part for the last time and was 19th. He was not only the oldest participant in these games at 81 years of age, but also the oldest Olympic athlete of modern times.

- 1954 silver at the World Cup in Cascais , Portugal
- 1974 Bronze at the World Championships in Laredo , Spain
Sports official
- Knowles also worked as a sports official. He was Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of the Bahamas .
