William Earl "Bill" Buchan (born May 9, 1935 in Seattle ) is a former American sailor .

successes

William Earl Buchan took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the Star boat class . Together with Steven Erickson he became Olympic champion ahead of Joachim Griese and Michael Marcour from Germany and the Italians Giorgio Gorla and Alfio Peraboni . Thanks to, among other things, three wins in a total of seven races and a total of 29.7 points, they received the gold medal.

Buchan won a total of eleven medals at world championships and was world champion four times. In 1961 he won his first title in the Starboot in San Diego , before winning the bronze medal in Newport in 1965 . In 1970 he was in Marstrand for the second time world champion and secured in 1973 in San Diego, 1976 in Nassau and 1979 in Marstrand three times the silver medal. In 1975 he became world champion in Soling class. From 1981 to 1983 he won bronze three times in a row in the Starboot, including 1983 with his son William Carl Buchan . He won his last medal and at the same time his third world championship title in the Star Boot in Nassau in 1985. Buchan took part in the America's Cup in 1974 as the skipper of the Intrepid . In 2013 he was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame .
