Semyon Ivanovich Rschishchin

Semjon Iwanowitsch Rschishschin (Russian: Семён Иванович Ржищин, born February 15, 1933 in Troitsk in Ryazan Oblast ; † December 27, 1986 ) was a Russian athlete who competed for the Soviet Union. In 1960 he became Olympic third in the 3000 meter obstacle course .

Rschishchin won his first Soviet championship title in 1955 in 8: 49.6 minutes. A year later on August 14, 1956, he defended his championship title in Moscow in 8: 39.8 minutes. With this he improved the world record of the Pole Jerzy Chromik by 0.4 s and was the first obstacle runner to stay below the time of 8:40 minutes. Just a month later, the Hungarian Sándor Rozsnyói undercut Rschishchin's world record by four seconds. In the quick final at the Melbourne Olympics , both Rschishchin and Rozsnyói were among the six runners who sprinted for the medals. The gold medal was won by the Briton Chris Brasher ahead of Rozsnyói and the Norwegian Ernst Larsen , behind the German Heinz Laufer , Rschishchin finished fifth in 8: 44.6 minutes, one second behind second place.

In 1957 Rschishchin won the Soviet championship title for the third time in 8: 40.0 minutes, with which time he led the world best list at the end of the year. At the UIE Sports Weeks, the Universiade of the Eastern Bloc, he won in 8: 50.2 minutes. On July 21, 1958, Rschishchin set the world record of 8: 35.6 min at his fourth championship win in Tallinn. Just twelve days later, Jerzy Chromik improved this record by over three seconds. At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , only these two runners stayed under 8:40 minutes; Chromik was clearly leading at the beginning of the final round, but Rschishchin came within 0.6 seconds and won the silver medal in 8: 38.8 minutes.

Rschishchin won his last Soviet championship title in 1959 in 8: 42.4 minutes, with 8: 37.8 minutes at the end of the year he led the world best of the year. In the Soviet championship in 1960 Nikolai Sokolow won in 8: 36.4 minutes with 0.2 seconds ahead of Rschishchin. At the Olympic Games in Rome the Pole Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak won ahead of Sokolow, Rschishchin won the bronze medal in 8: 42.2 minutes. In 1960, at the end of the year, Rschishchin was fifth on the world's best list of the year, after the 1961 season he ended his athletic career.

With a height of 1.73 m, his competition weight was 64 kg.
