Evgeni Borissowitsch Samsonow ( Russian Евгений Борисович Самсонов , English Yevgeny Borisovich Samsonov ; born  September 15, 1926 in Moscow , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † September 30, 2014 ibid) was a Russian rower and rowing coach who served on the Soviet Union. His greatest sporting success was winning the silver medal at the 1952 Olympic Games .

Career

Samsonow competed at club level for Krylya Sowetov (Moscow) and was Soviet champion five times in 1949, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1956.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Samsonov won the silver medal behind the team from the USA with the Soviet eight on July 23, 1952 . At the next Olympic Games , he retired with the Soviet eight before the final.

In 1953, 1954 and 1955 Samsonov won the gold medal at the European Championships with the Soviet eighth .

From 1959 to 1976 Samsonov was the national coach of the Soviet rowers, including at five Olympic Games. He was in charge of preparing the Krylatskoje rowing channel for the 1980 Olympic Games .

Yevgeny Samsonov died on September 30, 2014 at the age of 88.
