Boris Andreevich Stepanov
Boris Andrejewitsch Stepanow ( Russian Борис Андреевич Степанов ; born August 22, 1930 in Moscow , † December 28, 2007 ) was a Soviet boxer . In 1953 and 1955 he was vice European champion in bantamweight amateurs .
Career
Boris Stepanov started boxing as a teenager. He belonged to the workers' sports club Trud Moscow . He was relatively light and fought at the beginning of his career in flyweight and from mid-1951 in bantamweight. He had a very high clout with which he won many fights early.
For the first time he made lasting attention to himself at the Soviet championship in 1950, when he took 3rd place in the flyweight division behind Anatoli Bulakow and Lev Segalowitsch. In 1951 he came to the final of the Soviet flyweight championship, in which he was defeated, however, against Anatoly Bulakov. In August 1951 it was used for the first time at a major international event, the 3rd World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin (East). Already starting in the bantamweight division, he won there with a victory in the final over Istvan Horvath from Hungary.
1952 Boris Stepanov does not appear in any result lists. In 1953 he was the first Soviet champion with a victory in the final over W. Dadayev. In May 1953 he represented the Soviet colors at the European Championships in Warsaw. He won there in bantamweight over Tomislav Srdanovic, Yugoslavia and Wasil Borissow, Bulgaria on points and landed in the semifinals a knockout victory in the 2nd round over John McNally from Ireland. In the final he was defeated by Zenon Stefaniuk from Poland on points and became vice-European champion. In August 1953 he again won the bantamweight competition at the 4th World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest. In the final he defeated Otto Bostieg from Romania.
After his Soviet championship title in 1953, Boris Stepanov won this bantamweight title four times in a row from 1954 to 1957. In 1957 he defeated Oleg Grigoryev on points in the final, against whom he lost in the 1958 final. In 1960 he won the Soviet championship title for the sixth time and for the last time with a points win over Oleg Grigoryev. Despite his title wins in 1957 and 1960, Oleg Grigoryev was preferred to him at international championships in those years, who also became Olympic champion in 1960 .
Boris Stepanow competed at the European Championships in Berlin in 1955 and won there over Alphonse Halimi , France, Simon Alexandrow, Bulgaria and Wolfgang Schwarz , Federal Republic of Germany, on points. In the final, he lost again to Zenon Stefaniuk and was again runner-up in Europe.
In December 1956 he started at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in bantamweight. He lost there but already in his first battle (round of 16) against Freddie Gilroy from Ireland by knockout in the 3rd round. Duplicity of events, including his conqueror from the European Championships in 1953 and 1955 Zenon Stefaniuk was eliminated in Melbourne in the round of 16.
