Zenon Stefaniuk (born July 8, 1930 in Wojnow , † July 10, 1985 in Katowice ) was a Polish boxer . He was the European amateur bantamweight champion in 1953 and 1955.

Career

Zenon Stefaniuk started boxing in 1946 in Gdynia , where he had ended up due to the events of the war, at the local club "Zwiarkowca". In his further career he boxed for "Gwardia" Danzig and for BBTS Bielsko-Biała in Upper Silesia .

In 1952 he was the first Polish bantamweight champion after he had become third in the flyweight championship in 1950 and vice-champion in bantamweight in 1951. He won other Polish championships in 1953 and 1955 in bantamweight and 1954 in featherweight.

Zenon Stefaniuk's international career began in December 1952 when he was first used in an international match for the Polish national boxing team. He defeated the Finn Väinö Järvenpää in bantamweight in Warsaw on points. In May 1953 he started at the European Championships in Warsaw. He was brought into excellent shape by the Polish boxing trainer Feliks Stamm and defeated u. a. in the quarter-finals the Finnish Olympic champion from 1952 Pentti Hämäläinen on points. In the final, in front of 5,000 enthusiastic Polish spectators, he also defeated the Soviet champion Boris Stepanow and thus became European bantamweight champion.

In February 1955 Zenon Stefaniuk was defeated in Warsaw on the occasion of a city battle between Warsaw and Hamburg against Wolfgang Schwarz just on points. At the European Championships of the same year in Berlin he was in excellent shape again and won one after the other over Radoslav Radovan from Yugoslavia , Victor Șchiopu from Romania , Daniel Hellebuyck from Belgium and Boris Stepanow and was thus again European bantamweight champion.

His last start in an international championship was at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . Here he was surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round due to a point defeat against the Chilean Claudio Barrientos .

In 1957 Zenon Stefaniuk ended his boxer career. He became a boxing coach at his last boxing club in Bielsko-Biała.
