Vladimir Petrovich Maneev

Vladimir Petrovich Manejew (born February 5, 1932 in Novokuznetsk , Kemerovo Region , Soviet Union , † January 8, 1985 ibid) was a Soviet wrestler . He became world champion in 1955 and won the silver medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, each in Greco-Roman welterweight style .

Career

Vladimir Maneyev began wrestling in 1948, focusing on the Greco-Roman style. He was a member of the Metallurg Novokuznezk sports club and from that point worked in a metal works in Novokuznezk. He later studied at the Siberian Institute of Metallurgy and then worked for many years as a mining engineer in a coal mine.

His first major sporting success was the vice championship of the Soviet Union in 1952 in welterweight. In 1954 he was the first Soviet champion in this weight class and repeated this success in 1955. In those years, his main competitors in the Soviet Union were Shasam Safin , Olympic champion in 1952 and Georgi Chatworjan , the 1953 world champion and Grigori Gamarnik , 1955 world champion in the lightweight.

In 1955 he defeated the Swedish wrestlers L. Mansson and Rune Jansson in international matches in Leningrad and Moscow . In 1955 he was also used at the welterweight championship in Karlsruhe. In Karlsruhe he defeated Miklos Szilvassy , Hungary, Reinhold Bettschen, Switzerland, Milorad Arsic, Yugoslavia, Wladislaw Sekal, Czechoslovakia and Anton Mackowiak from the Federal Republic of Germany and became world champion.

In July 1956 Vladimir Manejew was the winner of the World Cup in Istanbul. He defeated Gian-Carlo Palmieri, Italy, Miklos Szilvassy, ​​Mithat Bayrak, Turkey, Mitü Petkoff, Bulgaria and Veikko Rantanen from Finland in the welterweight division. In December 1956 he took part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. He was considered a favorite and defeated in the welterweight division Veikko Rantenen, E. Wandaller, Austria, Siegfried Schäfer, who started for the all-German team, and Per Berlin from Sweden. In the final he fought against Mithat Bayrak, whom he had defeated at the World Cup in Istanbul. But this time Mithat Bayrak won on points and Vladimir Manejew had to be satisfied with the silver medal.

From 1957 Vladimir Manejew moved to the middleweight division and later even to the light heavyweight division because he could no longer bring the weight limit for the welterweight division. He remained an active wrestler until 1970, but did not appear in international championships. He died of a heart attack at the age of almost 53.
