Aya Medany

Aya Mahmud Abdallah Muhammad Medany ( Arabic آية محمود عبد الله محمد مدنى, DMG Āya Maḥmūd ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad Madanī ; * November 20, 1988 in Cairo ) is a former Egyptian pentathlete .

Athletic career

Aya Medany started exercising at the age of seven. She made her international debut in modern pentathlon at the age of 15 at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where she finished 28th. In an interview she later said that she was overwhelmed by the general conditions at the games, otherwise she would have been able to take a place in the top 20 according to her own assessment. In 2006 and 2008 she was junior world champion.

In 2008 Aya Medany became vice world champion and in 2011 she was a co-favorite for the world championships, in which she ultimately did not participate. These were supposed to take place in Egypt, but were moved to Moscow because of the revolution . The revolution itself followed her on television because her family had forbidden her to take part in the demonstrations in Tahrir Square . She won the African championship four times between 2004 and 2011 and came second once.

Ahead of the London Olympics, Medany announced that she was considering retiring from active sports. She is under public pressure in her home country because she (who did not cover her head until 2008) does not wear a full-body swimsuit ( Haşema ) in swimming competitions . However, full body suits have not been permitted since 2009 according to the rules of the World Swimming Federation Fédération Internationale de Natation , which also apply in the association for the modern pentathlon UIPM . In addition, she has ongoing physical complaints. In March 2014, she finally announced her resignation.

Honors

In 2014 Aya Medany received the IOC Women and Sport Award for Africa. Family and work

Aya Medany works at the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport in Cairo, a scientific institution of the Arab League . She is married and has one son. Her father is Mahmoud Medany , a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change .
