Jan-Hendrik Pelz's works are predominantly in the field of oil painting , with numerous works addressing the medium itself or putting it to the test. His artistic position oscillates between the media, with painting combining conceptual approaches with installations , performance or video art.

For example, in the video work Kunstgenuss (2011) , Pelz ate a painted self-portrait completely or demonstrated in Protest against Pelz (2013) with numerous demonstrators, megaphones and banners at Stuttgart Central Station loudly against himself as an artist who receives state funding and is thus portrayed as questionable becomes. In 2011, the artist placed over 500 of his paper works in water glasses, which were distributed free of charge to private individuals via a voucher published in the journal Kunst und Material . The progressive decomposition of the images in the water up to the complete disintegration of the paper was taken into account and demonstrates the transience of the image as well as the material. Pelz repeated the campaign in the same year and made the glasses available to the Nördlingen Art Association as an annual gift.

For the series Memory Protocols (2012), the artist asked citizens of the city of Nördlingen about their memories of exhibits in the city museum, whereupon he made paintings on the basis of these descriptions, which were later contrasted with the actual objects in an exhibition in the city museum Nördlingen . The Favorites series (2014–2015), which was presented for the first time in 2014 as part of the 67th Locarno International Film Festival (Switzerland), consists of 66 oil paintings that were created on the basis of a collaboration between Pelz and his favorite artists. As part of the concept, the artists named Pelz their favorite film and an arbitrary combination of five-digit numbers to indicate the time. When the films were stopped at the appropriate points, unpredictable still images were created, which were transferred to oil painting in a further step. Artists such as Hermann Nitsch , Pipilotti Rist , John Baldessari , Jonathan Meese , Luc Tuymans , Gavin Turk and Katharina Grosse were involved. Favorites was also exhibited in 2015 at the Videonale.Parcours in the Kunstmuseum Bonn . In May 2014 Pelz started the performance "Personal Data" during the exhibition "Just" in the Calwer Passage in Stuttgart. The artist gave away his own personal documents such as medical reports, bank statements, ID cards, love letters, letters of resignation, certificates, certificates and X-rays to passers-by after he had signed and numbered them.

In August 2016, Pelz installed the room installation "Room No. 1" for a series of exhibitions by "Salon Neucologne eV". The exhibition location was in an empty shop in a quarter of Berlin-Neukölln , which is considered a social hotspot in many places. The installation included six objects, each of which consisted of five oil paintings. The painted canvases showed the surfaces of mattresses and sheets and were stretched and put together in appropriate sizes and dimensions. The objects shown, mattresses, were not only represented by the possibilities of oil painting, but also reproduced in three dimensions in a second step. The boundaries between painting and sculpture blurred, leaving behind independent objects that only appeared as imitations at first glance. Thematically, the artist took up the redesign and use of empty spaces in the urban and social environment during the refugee crisis and opened up readability in different directions by setting up a “sleeping place”.

In the same year, Pelz took part in the European Art Biennale " Manifesta 11" in Zurich , Switzerland, by staging a series of performances in Cabaret Voltaire , the birthplace of Dadaism . Among other things, the artist appeared in the two-part performance "Reading" with four Swiss art historians, with whom he read out a self-composed manifesto . The readers began to read at different points in the text at the same time. As a result, different parts of the manifesto acoustically overlapped, making it incomprehensible. The message of the text remained unclear, the babble of voices developed its own dynamic and poetry . During another performance entitled "Ingredient # 14", Pelz cut a gemstone into powder together with the artist Johanna Mangold while Mangold was beating a drum. The ingredient was one of 23 ingredients that the artists brewed into a potion as part of the work "Magic Potion" to drink in a performance that will follow in 2018. Pelz also took part in the "Manifestina" project, which was taking place at the same time and was related to the Biennale and initiated by the artist Maurizio Cattelan .

Jan-Hendrik Pelz, “Manifestina March”, 2016

During the performance “Manifestina March” the artist protested loudly against the “Manifestina” itself together with a group of demonstrators, armed with over 50 portable paintings. After a protest march through Zurich's city center and a subway ride, the group crossed the river by boat Lake Zurich. The boundaries between performance, demonstration and mobile picture exhibition became unclear.

Jan-Hendrik Pelz & Johanna Mangold, performance in the Louvre, Paris, France

From 2016 to 2018 Pelz worked with the artist Johanna Mangold on the performance video work “Magic Potion”. The film consists of twenty-four individual parts and has a total length of over two hours. The focus of the work is the performative brewing of a magic potion that, according to her own statements, has transformed her into the best artists in the world. According to Pelz und Mangold, after extensive research in the field of magic, a list of suitable ingredients was compiled and their procurement was documented in advance using video technology. The brewed potion was drunk in a final performance. The performances took place in the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich or at the grave of the painter Paul Klee near Bern in Switzerland. In one scene, the artists prick their fingertips with a needle in order to add the drops of blood obtained to the potion, holding their hands between the tips of the inverted glass pyramid and the small, fifth pyramid below it in the entrance hall of the Louvre art museum in Paris . The German artist Jonathan Meese cut his head as part of a guest appearance in the film, which then also served as an ingredient.
