Oberwelt (exhibition)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oberwelt eV is an exhibition and event space in Stuttgart run by artists .

history

The association has existed under changing names since 1978 and is organized by different individuals and groups. These are usually artists or other cultural workers, but not professional curators.

In addition to exhibitions, the Oberwelt program also includes lectures, discussions and seminars. In terms of content, the questioning of common art terms and the transgression of the art context play a central role. In addition to one-off events, conceptually coherent series occupy an important place in the event program. Even not yet established artists or artist groups can implement their approaches in the upper world and present them to a supraregional audience. The Oberwelt eV team is not only active in the organization, but also jointly produces its own work. There are collaborations with numerous German off-spaces : including the Stuttgarter Kunstverein eV , the Lothringer13 / laden and the Galerie Peripherie Tübingen.

The Oberwelt eV is supported on the one hand by the city of Stuttgart and on the other hand by the state of Baden-Württemberg . The most important private sponsor is the Waldenbuch chocolate manufacturer Ritter Sport .

The "Hool Tours" exhibition was particularly controversial. Oberwelt made its rooms available to the travel company Hooltours for the World Cup. From there, the agency offered safaris to visit the last refuges of violent tourism. The city of Stuttgart and the state of Baden-Württemberg felt that their reputation had been damaged and the promotion of the art space was at risk. After negotiations, the authorities were convinced of the irony of the approach.
