Built in the style pluralism Villa is located at the southern end of red above the valley of the Red , on the road 259, which Orsenhausen and Great Schafhausen after Schwendi leads. It is surrounded by a fence, within which there is a historical park area.

The villa was built in 1912. The client was Raymund Fugger (1870-1949), who came from a branch of the Fugger family, which is why it is also called "Villa Fugger" . The architect was Balthasar von Hornstein-Grüningen. In 1925, however, Raymund Fugger had to give up the property again because he ran into financial difficulties. Thereupon Alexandra von Hornstein (1903-1932) acquired the small country castle. She lived there with Feodora Christ (1903–1983) until her suicide .

Feodora Christ took over the villa in 1933 and in the same year married the musician Herman Hoenes (1900–1978). The cellist Herman Hoenes was deputy conductor of the " Reichs-Symphonie-Orchester " from 1932 to 1935 . The couple retired to the villa in Rot and devoted themselves to collecting primarily Asian art.

The art collection of the Hoenes couple, the property with park including all assets were brought into a museum foundation - the Hoenes Foundation - by Feodora Hoenes. The Fuggerschlösschen became the Villa Rot Museum , which opened on August 28, 1992.

Today the Museum Villa Rot is an exhibition center for international contemporary art with an intercultural program. Exhibitions are shown that deal with the thematic and formal border areas of art, culture and society.

In 2014 the museum received an extension that blends into the park landscape and expands the exhibition area. As a counterpoint to the intimate cabinet rooms of the historic existing building, the extension designed by the Böblingen architects Hinrichsmeier & Bertsch offers space for large-scale sculptures, sculptures and installations. In 2015, the building received the “Exemplary Building” award from the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects.

The building has, among other things, a linoleum floor from the Deutsche Linoleum-Werke in Delmenhorst (then Delmenhorster Linoleumwerke), which was partly designed by the architect Bruno Paul .

In addition to the exhibitions, the Museum Villa Rot organizes series of concerts. The Hoenessaal of the Villa Rot, named after the cellist, conductor and founder, provides the setting for these events.

circle of friends

The "Freundeskreis Museum Villa Rot" was registered in 1994 in the register of associations. Since then he has been supporting the museum in various matters such as purchasing furniture, technical equipment and events.
