István Gergely

István Gergely (born August 20, 1976 in Dunajská Streda , Czechoslovakia) is a former Hungarian water polo player .

The 2.01 m tall goalkeeper started with water polo in Czechoslovakia. With Novaky Gergely became Slovak champions in 1996 and 1997. Via Italy and Spain he moved to Budapest, where he played for Domino-BHSE , Honved's water polo club . With this club he became Hungarian champion in 2003 and 2004.

After playing 130 international matches for Slovakia, the Hungarian-born player took on Hungarian citizenship and from 2003 acted as a substitute goalkeeper for Zoltán Szécsi in the Hungarian national team. At his first major tournament he became world champion and in 2004 he was on the team of the Olympic champion in Athens .

After finishing second at the 2005 World Cup , Gergely was no longer active in the national team. Shortly before the 2008 Olympic Games , he was nominated again for the national team. In Beijing he was part of the squad that won the third Hungarian Olympic victory in a row.
