Obergraben (Büren)

The Obergraben is located about 2 kilometers from the city of Büren (Westphalia) , Paderborn district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The ditch leads along the road 637. It ends next to the entrance to Gut Holthausen .

history

The upper trench was built in 1916 by prisoners of war of the First World War . It served to increase the efficiency of the power station, which was located in the Obermühle , which was demolished in 1984 . It was built in six months. The prisoners who built it were housed in Gut Holthausen until the trench was completed. It began below Weine at a weir that had been newly built for the construction of the trench and was 1.5 kilometers in length. In the past, the ditch was popularly known as the "Panama Canal".
