The Jewel of Medina

Shortly before the planned publication of the novel The Jewel of Medina about the wife Aisha bint Abi Bakr of the Muslim religious founder Mohammed , the publishing house Random House stopped the delivery in 2008 . The reason given was that the publication could hurt the feelings of Muslims and provoke acts of violence by fanatics. Apparently the Islam historian Denise Spellberg had warned against the publication. This step was reminiscent of the cancellation of the opera Idomeneo in Berlin in 2006.

The British writer Salman Rushdie , also known for the controversy surrounding his novel The Satanic Verses , spoke of “censorship out of fear”. The Danish draftsman Kurt Westergaard , made famous through The Face of Muhammad , accused the publisher of admitting it. The novel was published in 2008 by Beaufort Books in New York City, the German translation in the same year by Pendo Verlag in Zurich.
