Māris Štrombergs (born March 10, 1987 in Valmiera ) is a former Latvian BMX cyclist.
Athletic career
Štrombergs won the first gold medal in this sport for men at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . It was the second Olympic gold medal for Latvia after regaining independence. At the 2012 Summer Olympics , Štrombergs defended his title, which he ultimately succeeded in doing. He was the first Latvian Olympian to win gold twice.
Štrombergs was world champion in 2008 and 2010 and European champion in 2008 and 2013.
He ended his career on November 14, 2018.
Honors
Māris Štrombergs was honored with the induction into the Hall of Fame of the European cycling association Union Européenne de Cyclisme . In 2008 and 2012 he was also voted Latvian Sportsman of the Year .
