The mountain bike race of women in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing was held on 23 August, 2008.
At 10:00 a.m. local time , all 30 athletes started the race together. A total of six laps of 4.45 km each had to be covered. This resulted in a total distance of 26.70 km.
The German Sabine Spitz separated from the rest of the athletes right at the beginning of the race and was able to secure the Olympic victory with a lead of more than 40 seconds over the Pole Maja Włoszczowska . The decision for the bronze medal was won by Irina Kalentjewa from Russia who prevailed against the Canadian Catharine Pendrel in the final round . Overall, only 18 of the 30 athletes finished the race, 14 of them were eliminated due to a lap.
