The road race of the men at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing took place on 9 August, 2008.
Race course
At the start at 11:00 a.m. local time , 143 athletes took part, of which only about half finished the race. The first half of the race was dominated by two escapees, Patricio Almonacid from Chile and Horacio Gallardo from Bolivia, after which some breakaway groups were able to break away for several kilometers before the Luxemburgish Andy Schleck attacked the race. He was followed by four drivers, Samuel Sánchez from Spain, Davide Rebellin (Italy), Alexander Kolobnew (Russia) and Michael Rogers (Australia). Kolobnew and Rogers had to let go on the last climb, but were brought back to the top three drivers by Fabian Cancellara, who attacked from the chasing group, so that in the end six drivers sprinted for victory. Sánchez won this sprint ahead of Rebellin and Cancellara. At the end of April 2009, the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI) confirmed that the second rebel had tested positive for the EPO drug CERA during follow-up checks on doping samples . On November 17, 2009, Rebellin was officially stripped of her silver medal.
Route
In total, the race led over 245.4 kilometers, which was also the longest distance in a road bike race in Olympic history. The race started at the Yongding Gate , after about 78.8 mostly flat kilometers, the drivers reached Badaling on the Great Wall of China and had to drive the 23.8 km long lap over the Juyongguan Pass seven times . There was a difference in altitude of 338.2 meters compared to the start.
Due to the safety regulations of the Olympic organizers, no spectators were allowed to stand on the roadside.
Results
If a rider has crossed the finish line in the same group as the rider in front of him, the same time is given to him and is shown in the results under the abbreviation "st" (same time).
The drivers Davide Rebellin (Italy) and Stefan Schumacher (Germany) were subsequently disqualified for positive doping tests and removed from the results.
