The men's road race at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich took place on September 7, 1972. 163 athletes started, 76 of them finished the race.
Route
The 22.8-kilometer circuit was relatively flat and easy. It led from Grünwald via Straßlach past the hamlet of Beigarten to Schäftlarn and back to Grünwald, where the Isar had to be crossed twice .
Race course
On the sixth lap of the race, a group of 35 drivers pulled away. In the last lap the Dutchman Hennie Kuiper was able to pull away and finally cross the finish line with a margin of 27 seconds. Clyde Sefton from Australia won silver. The Spaniard Jaime Huélamo took bronze, but was disqualified after a positive doping test. As fourth-placed Bruce Biddle was not tested for doping substances, no new bronze medalist was named.
Seven Northern Irish athletes also appeared at the start without being accredited to protest the participation of the Irish athletes. The four members of the Irish Republican Army were then arrested, but later released.
