The men's team time trial at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich took place on August 29, 1972. There were 35 nations with four athletes each at the start, making a total of 140 athletes.
The team of the Soviet Union with Valery Jardy , Gennady Komnatov , Valery Likhachev and Boris Shukhov became Olympic champions . The silver medal went to the Poles and the third-placed Dutch team ( the Hertog , Kuiper , Priem and van den Hoek ) was disqualified and the bronze medals revoked because Aad van den Hoek was doped. This left third place vacant.
Route
The 100-kilometer team time trial was held on the former Munich-Lindau motorway section (today: A 95 Munich-Garmisch motorway ) with a maximum gradient of 3.7 percent. The start-finish area was between the Starnberg motorway triangle and the Schäftlarn exit . The distance between the teams at the start was two minutes, the starting order was drawn. Finally, at an interval of four minutes, the top ten teams of the 1971 World Cup took to the track.
