Gustaaf Van Cauter

Gustaaf Van Cauter (born March 31, 1948 in Mechelen ) is a former Belgian cyclist and world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Van Cauter was a successful junior and amateur before making his first start in the Belgian national team in 1971; he drove the GDR tour and retired from the race after a stage win due to a crash.

In August he was the title holder in the team time trial at the road world championships . Shortly beforehand, the Belgian four-man had won the Olympic prize (a 100-kilometer team time trial) in the GDR. The following year he was third in the Military World Championships and won a stage of the domestic Tour of Belgium , which he finished in fourth place. At the Summer Olympics in Munich he finished fourth with the Belgian foursome, later the third-placed Dutch team was disqualified and Belgium was awarded the bronze medal.

In 1973 Van Cauter became a professional driver for the Watney-Maes team . In 1973 he rode the Tour de France and retired on the 13th stage. After a less than successful season in 1973, he ended his career.
