Gustaaf Hermans

Gustaaf Hermans (born May 12, 1951 in Wezemaal ) is a former Belgian cyclist and world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Hermans was a successful junior and amateur who became vice-champion of the Belgian juniors in 1970. In 1971 he finished on the podium in stage races in Luxembourg and Great Britain and won several national races. In August 1971 he was the title holder in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships . Shortly before, the Belgian four-man had won the Olympic Prize (a 100-kilometer team time trial) in the GDR. The following year he won stages of the domestic Tour of Belgium and the Tour of Algeria . He won one of the most important Belgian amateur races, the Flèche Ardennaise . At the Summer Olympics in Munich he finished fourth with the Belgian foursome, later the third-placed Dutch team was disqualified and Belgium was awarded the bronze medal. In the Olympic individual race he was classified as 45th.

In 1973 he became a professional driver for the German team Rokado . After a less than successful career as a professional driver, he ended his career in 1975.
