Rotselaar is a Belgian municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant . It consists of the localities Rotselaar , Werchter and Wezemaal .

history

The places Rotselaar and Wezemaal were first mentioned in 1044 . Werchters was first mentioned between 1138 and 1152 .

During the First World War there was an artillery battle in Rotselaar , in which 360 Belgian and German soldiers were killed. 67 houses were destroyed and 38 civilians were killed as a result of fighting.

Description: Three (2, 1) upper half red lilies set in silver . A Spangenhelm with red and silver helmet covers rests on the upper edge of the shield . The helmet ornament is a silver open flight in the red-silver bead .

Note: The coat of arms is identical to that of Haacht .

Attractions

  • The Van Doren watermill , whose origins date back to the 12th century , is still in operation today to generate electricity.
  • The Sint-Jan-De-Doperkerk church in Werchter was built in 1439 .
  • The neo-Gothic Sint-Pieterskerk in the center of Rotselaar was rebuilt on a historical site in 1846 .

Town twinning

A partnership between Rotselaar and Bad Gandersheim in southern Lower Saxony has existed since 1987 .

Events

The Rock Werchter music festival has been held annually since 1974 with more than 100,000 visitors.
