The men's road race at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome took place on August 30, 1960 at 9:00 a.m.
Circuit
The road race had to cover 12 laps on a 14.615 km long circuit in the Flaminio district . It started on Via Flaminia and from there continued on Via Di Grottarossa and returned along Via Cassia back to the start. On the first 6 km there was a steep ascent and a few switchbacks to conquer. The next 2.5 km was only slightly uphill. In total, the race was 194.83 km.
Race course
As the Dane Knud Enemark Jensen fell unconscious from his bike in the team time trial four days earlier and later died in hospital, the Danish athletes did not take part in the race.
Already in the second lap, the Dutchman Lex van Kreuningen pulled away from the main field and gained a lead of 46 seconds up to the fourth lap. In the fifth round he and his compatriot Jan Hugens formed the leading duo. But in the seventh lap, seven other drivers, including the Italian Livio Trapè and Wiktor Kapitonow from the Soviet Union, caught up with the two and the leading group was thus increased to nine athletes. Although other drivers managed to join the leading group, Trapè and Kapitonow left this group four laps before the end. Kapitonow started a sprint after eleven laps and crossed the finish line cheering, but one lap too early. But even one lap later he was able to beat Trapè by the width of a tire.
Because of the heat of 38 ° C that prevailed that day, the South Korean No Do-cheon had to be hospitalized.
